Regional Drinking Water Quality

The Puget Sound’s water is among the cleanest in the nation.

The water crisis in Flint, Michigan started in 2014 when the city’s drinking water was contaminated with lead. 100,000 people were exposed to high levels of lead in their drinking water.

In summer 2022, major flooding caused the largest treatment plant in Jackson, Mississippi to stop treating the local water. 150,000 residents lost access to safe drinking water.

In the central Puget Sound, you don’t have to think twice about turning on the tap. Supplying you and your family with safe, reliable, and great tasting drinking water is the region’s water providers’ highest priority. Along with ensuring public health, maintaining water quality enhances our quality of life, supports the region’s economy, and protects natural resources.

To accomplish all this, Everett, Seattle, and Tacoma regularly test the drinking water for contaminants, bacteria, and adequate chlorine levels. Year after year the results show that the water quality in the central Puget Sound is better than the recommended federal levels designed to protect public health.

Regional water providers also make ongoing, strategic infrastructure investments to ensure the continued delivery of safe, clean drinking water to every customer.
